how accurate do you think the really popular bibles are these days

im interested to know what other christians think about the various translations and their accuracy

Accuracy is a relative term.

Not one translation is 100% accurate, all the translators are biased with their own doctrines.

Though, my list of favorite translations, based on accuracy are KJV, ESV and the NASB

RSV is great. Catholics and Protestants now have a text to agree upon.

I personally love my ESV Study Bible and NASB. My wife, a more recent convert to Christianity, uses an NLT.

I used to... well... hate The Message, but I've found it useful for a few sermons but I still compare it to two or three other translations either through esword or Bible Gateway beforehand.

I'm late to the conversation. I prefer the ESV. I have the study version and I don't think it can be matched. But I could surely be wrong. I also like the NASB.

Agree that the only EXACT words of our Lord were in the original autographs which we no longer have. However, we have many, many manuscripts datng back to the 3rd century to ensure that we come as close as is possible.

I grew up on the KJV, but only use it rarely now. If you really want to know some of the finer points of translation, start up a conversation with a KJV ONLY advocate. It's an experience you'll not soon forget for more than reasons of translation.

If I'm not mistaken (and I could be), The Message is not a translation, but a parphrase much like the Living Bible that was once so popular.

They are all good for understanding the overall messages, but for accuracy I would probably use the ARTB for OT study and most definitely the AENT for NT study. ...I add also that both were done with no affiliation to maintaining a denominational doctrine. The ARTB was scientifically translated and the AENT was translated from Aramaic msss with no Greek perversions.
