What does the Bible teach about home education? Should Christian parents home educate their children? Benefits and pitfalls?

If you home school your children in america do you get some choice as to what you can and cant teach?

i suppose a sub question would be do laws on that change from state to state or is it a federal statute?

You can teach them anything, they just need to cover the State's standard for a high school graduate.

Yes, that includes the theory of Evolution in all its forms. :)

The USA is being run by sinful men, don't expect anything to change for the good.

I have some experience with homeschooling. I highly recommend the Home School Defense League for anyone wanting to get the latest information on laws relating to educating children at home. Here's the link: http://www.hslda.org/Default.asp?bhcp=1

You'll find that the laws are different in each state. Some states are very lenient, and others that are so strict as to border on totalitarianism. One thing is certain. There are people 'out there' who want to remove this right from parents. It's not always about Christians either. Studies show that home schooling is most often used by people of faith, but there are many exceptions.

I do some home-school consulting. I taught 3rd grade for 10 years in a small school district mostly attended by children of the Mormon beliefs. Now I assist parents as they face the challenges of educating their children at home.

Home-schooling is not difficult. The sheer number of resources available to parents now is very gratifying. But it shouldn't be undertaken by parents who aren't completely dedicated to making it successful. You cannot throw a work-book at a child and expect them to learn. It should be a joy to the parents, not a task to simply be accomplished. Your child should experience the wonder of learning in a variety of ways. Never miss an opportunity to teach, whether that is a trip to grocery store or a museum of history or science.

The specific question regarding evolution is that you should introduce the 'theory' to your child. If they go on to college, some knowledge of this is essential. Just make sure your child knows that the Bible has a perspective as well. I can personally recommend some people I know who are Christians, that have been involved in the science disciplines most of their lives. They love to help home-schoolers.

Somes years ago, while doing a research project, I had the opportunity to speak to the Director of Admissions at Stanford University. He told me that he welcomes home-schoolers and actively seeks them out for attendance. His words were that home-schoolers have 'educational vitality' that most children who attend public or even private schools do not possess. Keep good records of what you teach. If your child is required by law to have outside testing done, keep those test results as well. There are programs in place that offer instant grading and record keeping.

I would consider it an honor to assist anyone from the forums here, should they need it.

The best educator is our Lord.

Blessings to all,
